BBC - The Story of India (2007)
Information
The world’s largest democracy and a rising economic giant, India is now as well known across the globe for its mastery of computer technology as it is for its many-armed gods and its famous spiritual traditions. But India is also the world’s most ancient surviving civilisation, with unbroken continuity back into prehistory.
Like other great civilisations - Greece or Egypt for example, over the millennia it has enjoyed not just one but several brilliant golden ages in art and culture. Its great thinkers and religious leaders have permanently changed the face of the globe. But while the glories of Rome, Egypt, and Greece, have all been the subject of TV portraits, as yet there has been no television story of India on our screens. This series sets out for the first time to do that: to show a world audience the wonders of India; the incredible richness and diversity of its peoples, cultures and landscapes; and the intense drama of its past, including some of the most momentous, exciting and moving events in world history.

BBC - Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life
Date: Sunday 1st February 2009
Time: 21:00 to 22:00
Duration: 59:30
Quote:
Passionate Darwinian David Attenborough, who sees evolution as the cornerstone of all
the series he has ever made, shares his personal view on Darwin’s controversial idea.

Journeying through the last two hundred years, he tracks the changes in our understanding
of the natural world, and asks three key questions:

How and why did Darwin come up with his theory?
Why do most people think he was right?
Why is it more important now than ever before?

David starts his journey in Darwin’s home at Down House in Kent, where Darwin worried and
puzzled over the origins of life.

David goes back to his roots in Leicestershire, where he hunted for fossils as a child, and
where another schoolboy unearthed a significant find in the 1950s. And he revisits
Cambridge University, where both he and Darwin studied, and where many years later the DNA
double helix was discovered, providing the foundations for genetics.

At the end of his journey in the Natural History Museum in London, David concludes that
Darwin’s great insight revolutionised the way in which we see the world.

We now understand why there are so many different species, and why they are distributed
in the way they are. But above all, Darwin has shown us that we are not set apart from
the natural world, and do not have dominion over it.

We are subject to its laws and processes, as are all other animals on earth to which,
indeed, we are related.

A landmark series that reveals that plants can be as dramatic, adventurous and enterprising as animals.

Sir David Attenborough reveals plants as they have never been seen before - on the move and dangerously devious. Each programme takes one of the major problems of life - growing, finding food, reproduction - and the varied ways plants have evolved to solve it. Filmed from the plant’s point of view, using computer animations, fibre-optics and unique time-lapse photography.

BBC Iguanas Living like Dinosaurs

Information

Dinosaurs may be dead and gone, but can a living reptile now help uncover secrets of the dinosaurs’ lost world? Green iguanas, adorned with impressive spikes and claws, were once cast as dinosaurs in B movies. Although they are not directly descended from the dinosaurs, new research reveals that the social lives of these modern lizards may show us how the dinosaurs behaved. David Attenborough takes us deep into the jungles of Central America and reveals a chilling cast of prehistoric-looking reptiles locked into battles every bit as dramatic as those played out by the dinosaurs.

Information

David Attenborough and the BBC have a well-earned reputation for producing some of the greatest nature programmes, but The Life of Mammals could well be Attenborough’s magnum opus. Much of the footage shot for this series had never been seen before, and is presented with the respect and reverence for the natural world that Attenborough has made his trademark. It never ceases to surprise: the sight of a lion taking down a wildebeest on the African savannah has almost become a clich? of nature programmes, yet in The Life of Mammals the cameras keep rolling and the viewer witnesses the fallen animal’s herd coming to its rescue and driving off the lion. It’s a moving sight and just one of many remarkable scenes.

A thorough and entertaining overview of one of evolution’s greatest success stories, the series is loosely structured to follow the development of mammals, beginning with the basics in “A Winning Design”, which clarifies what makes a mammal different from reptiles and birds–no, it isn’t egg-laying: both the platypus and the echidna are egg-laying mammals; it’s their ability to adapt. And it’s this adaptability that becomes the crux of the remainder of the series. “Insect Hunters” focuses on mammals who have specifically adapted to eating insects, from the giant anteater and the armoured armadillo to bats, which have evolved into complex and effective hunters. “Plant Predators” demonstrates the particular (and often peculiar) adaptations of herbivores, while “Chisellers” is about those mammals who feed primarily on roots and seeds, ranging from tree-dwelling squirrels to opportunistic mice and rats. “Meat Eaters” talks about the evolutionary arms race that exists between predators and prey, and the unique adaptations of both individual and pack hunters. Omnivores are explored in “Opportunists”–mammals like bears and raccoons, whose varied diet allows them to occupy nearly any environment. “Return to the Water” discusses those mammals such as whales, seals and dolphins that have left behind life on dry land and adapted completely to life in the sea, existing at the top of the food chain. The last three episodes–“Life in the Trees”, “Social Climbers” and “Food for Thought”–take the viewer through the development of primates, eventually culminating in that most successful mammal: man
